Beta Mu Journey to the South
May 29, 2019
On May 27th, a group of Beta Mu alumni and friends began a journey in the famed Mississippi Delta. Bob ('72) and Ingrid (Tufts ’74) Coutts hosted our intrepid crew, including John “Bots” (’72) and Paula Roberge, Bill “Hammy” Hamilton (’71) and Christiane Wiles, Chip (’72) and Barb Glassanos, Tom (’71) and Caroline Elliot, Phil (’72) and Marianne Glassanos, Bob “Wazoo” (’74) and Nancy Williams, Ken (74) and Barb Hosack, and Jim and Jan (Tufts ’72) Just. We were looking forward to finishing our day in the Big Easy and enjoying the food, drink, and entertainment that has made New Orleans so famous.
After finishing our whirlwind tour of the sites of Memphis, our travel day was dramatically interrupted at a rail crossing north of Bentonia, MS when our train hit a water tank truck at an unguarded crossing. We spent the next half-day in Bentonia, a backwater town of 472 souls, and it quickly became, now and forever a place in the hearts of our 18 travelers. We experienced the home of the delta blues; a cold beer in a paper sack at the Blue Front Café (on the list of National Historic Places); met the blues legend Jimmy “Duck” Holmes; experienced the kindness of the local Police Chief and the emergency personnel, and met the lovely townsfolk of Bentonia. The Chief insisted that we get out of the crushing delta heat and settle back in the A/C of his small jail. The convicts had to clear out and make way for us, but they could not have been kinder or more accommodating. For a few brief hours, this group of Jumbos took over Bentonia. We made it to New Orleans...but not by train. That was another adventure that we will tell you about the next time we see you. This was a grand time for a bunch of Delts seeing a whole different part of our glorious country and spending some wonderful time together.
